Wedding Reviews Vol.3: Hair and Make-up

Sandra Colavolpe

I love love my hair on my wedding day.  Sam was great and it was fun talking to her.  She has a full-time job and does hair on the side.  And the best part, her prices could not be beat.  My hair was short and I was a little worried there wasn’t much that could be done.  But she was able to do 3 hairstyles at my trial.  She took pictures of the style I chose.  However, on the wedding day, my hair turned out a little different.  I had hair dangling on the side at the trial, but I had none at the wedding.  Luckily, I loved my wedding day hair better and it stayed up the whole day!

Krystal Treanor (www.i-dofaces.com)

I loved her choice of colors for my face and she was able to cover my blemishes beautifully.  I wasn’t a big fan of how she did my lashes though.  It was a little more mascara than I was used to.  I love the make-up she did for my maid-of-honor.  She did my mom’s make-up too, but my mom and I weren’t too happy with it.  My mom’s face turned out oily for some reason and her lipstick was too light for her face color.  Krystal provided us with extra lipcolor for touch up and oil-blotting sheets.  However, I didn’t even need the extra lipcolor.  My make-up stayed the whole time.

Wedding Reviews Vol.2: Attire and Accessories

RK Bridal (www.rkbridal.com)

I bought an off-white Watters bridesmaid dress to use as my bridal dress.  You don’t get as good of an attention as you would if you were buying a bridal dress.  Someone assisted me on finding the dresses I wanted to try on.  However, no one assisted me on trying the dress.  No one was there with clamps to hold the dress tight, I had to hold the back of the dress myself.  For only $236 (alterations up $65 for a bridesmaid dress), I couldn’t complain.  But I’ve been a bad bride and found another dress that I liked better.

Priscilla of Boston NYC (www.priscillaofboston.com)

I got the dress that I wore at my wedding at a Priscilla of Boston sample sale.  They usually hold sample sales quarterly (March, June, September and December).  They didn’t have a lot of selections.  And there were a few $199 dresses, mostly chiffon or destination dresses.  The price of my dress was very reasonable.  However, their alterations were ridiculous.

Most of the staff was pretty accommodating, but nothing special.  One of the staff yelled at my mom for going in one of their rooms which apparently was for staff only.  But the saleslady processing my payment told me to wait for her inside that room so my mom went inside as well.  My mom went a little further to throw something in the trash bin.  I guess it would have been okay with them if my mom just threw her trash on their floor.

Etsy Seller Enchantedly Yours (www.etsy.com/shop/enchantedlyyours)

I love my hair flower!  And the price ($9.99) was very reasonable compared to a lot out there.  For only $2.50 shipping, I got the flower pretty quickly – 5 days.

Macy’s (www.macys.com)

We got the men’s sportcoats, pants, ties, and my jewelry from Macy’s.  Unfortunately, their selections differ in different stores.  I couldn’t believe they didn’t have the sportcoats we needed at the Herald Square store.  What I love about Macy’s is its return policy and the sales and coupons.

Nina Shoes (www.ninashoes.com)

My blue shoes were Nina Forbes and they were comfortable and reasonably priced.  Sign up for their email alerts and you get 20% off.  I thought they were a little too dark, but they turned out great in photos.

Zappos (www.zappos.com)

We got the men’s Sperry boat shoes from Zappos.  You can usually find cheaper prices somewhere else, but the return policy is just great.  The Sperry Top-Sider Authentic Original run small, so we were able to return the smaller shoes without a problem and it was free.

Blue Nile (www.bluenile.com)

I got my wedding band from Blue Nile coz Helzberg didn’t have a matching band with the engagement ring mounting I bought from them.  Blue Nile is a bit more expensive than others.  However, I like their customer service and packaging.

Helzberg (www.helzberg.com)

I replaced my engagement ring mounting with another from Helzberg because we couldn’t find a band that will fit my original mounting.  We also got John’s wedding band from Helzberg.

They totally forgot about John’s wedding band and didn’t call us when it arrived.  They were also charging us more than $200 just to mount my diamond into the new mounting.  We went somewhere else.

Wedding Reviews Vol.1: DIY Stationery

Paper Source (www.paper-source.com)

I bought the bookbinding supplies I used for the invitation boxes at Paper Source.  Some (only some) of the prices were pretty reasonable.  The quality of the bookcloth was great and their PVA glue has better adhesive strength than the others I’ve tried.  However, the bookboards were a little frayed on the sides.

Paper Presentation (www.paperpresentation.com)

I bought my paper supplies from Paper Presentation.  I was able to find cheaper paper supplies online, but it was nice to be able to see the papers in person.  I also got the bookboards cut there and the guy was awesome.  I bought a luggage-ful of bookboard and he finished it quickly so we didn’t have to come back.  He even charged me less than I was supposed to pay.

Engaged: Travis & Lauren

Photographed by Carrie Whalin

We’ve booked our photographer for Maui!

We’ve always wanted a beach wedding, but we weren’t able to.  We had a wedding by the water, but a wonderful one nonetheless.  While I was researching things to do in Hawaii for our honeymoon, it came to me to do a sort of a honeymoon/trash-the-dress photo shoot.  The beaches in Hawaii are just gorgeous and the honeymoon is the perfect opportunity to have our new life documented on a beach when we weren’t able to at our wedding.

I am so excited to have found a great photographer based in Maui, Aihara Visuals.  Just look at her photos.  I can’t wait!

Free Flash-based website from Wix.com

Do you like the Flash sites you see online and want one of your own, but don’t know how to use Flash?  Well, now you can for free at Wix.com.  I’m not a big fan of Flash websites as a lot of them are not universally accessible.  But you can do a lot of cool things (e.g. animations).

Now that our wedding is done, I decided to update our wedding website to contain mostly photos.  So I tried out Wix.  Here are screenshots of the site I created.

The Wix site editor was pretty easy to use if you’re starting from a template and you need to do basic editing.  Some actions that you need to do may not be easy to figure out sometimes.  The page manager is the part that I hate the most.  It’s hard to get to and hard to understand.  The editor also doesn’t have a media manager.  There’s no way to organize photos (for example) and if you need to use them again, you’ll have to scroll through a lot of pages if you have a lot of photos.
