Maine passed a bill last Tuesday legalizing same-sex marriages in the state. The state is the fifth state to allow same-sex marriages, joining Connecticut, Iowa, Massachusetts and New Hampshire. Rhode Island is now the only remaining New England state that is yet to join its sister states.

The law is supposed to take effect in September. But a referendum to challenge the bill is very likely and may delay that.
