DIY: wax luminaries

Aren’t these luminaries gorgeous? They’re actually made using wax and balloon. Candletech.com has instructions including step-by-step photos on how to create your own beautiful wax luminaries.

DIY balloon wax luminaries

  1. Fill a water balloon with tepid water.
  2. Melt your wax. Optimum working temperature for this project is 180 degrees Fahrenheit. Try to maintain this temperature for your wax while working by keeping it on a double boiler.
  3. Slowly dip your balloon into the wax to just below the water level in the balloon. Warning: Do not dip the balloon into the wax past the water level. This could cause the balloon to pop.
  4. Hold the balloon in the wax for a few seconds, and then slowly lift it out of the wax. Dip the balloon a few more times, allowing some time between dips to let the wax cool.
  5. While it is still quite warm, carefully set the balloon down onto a piece of paper or a cookie sheet, making sure it is level. This will create a flat bottom for the luminary.
  6. Dip your balloon a few more times until it is the desired thickness. A good target thickness is 1/4 to 1/2 of an inch.
  7. Set the balloon on the paper or cookie sheet again and let it cool.
  8. When the wax is completely cooled, hold the balloon over a sink or bucket, facing away from you. Carefully pop the balloon with a skewer or knife and let the water drain out. Throw away the balloon shards.
  9. To level the top of the luminary, heat a cookie sheet on the stove and place the luminary top-down onto the hot sheet and carefully melt the edges until it is level.
  10. Place a tea light or votive inside the luminary and burn on a candle holder in a dark area.

I love DIYing and I would love love to do this for my wedding.  Unfortunately, I think we’re doing a day wedding so candles are not really needed :( .

TUESDAY FUNNY

I will seek and find you.
I shall take you to bed and have my way with you.
I will make you ache, shake & sweat until you moan & groan.
I will make you beg for mercy, beg for me to stop.
I will exhaust you to the point that you will be relieved when I’m finished with you.
And, when I am finished, you will be weak for days.

All my love,
The Flu

Thank you Sara for the email

My dream wedding

I’m one of those girls who started dreaming of their wedding when they were 12. Heck, I even had an inspiration board – created using cutouts from my aunt’s magazines. My dream wedding started with a church, lit with tons of candles.  I wanted to feel like a princess and walk down the aisle in a ball gown.  The groom was the last piece of the puzzle.

Now that the time has come for me to plan a real one – complete with a groom, I had a change of heart.  I want something totally different from what I imagined when I was a kid.  Now, I want an intimate wedding by the beach, walk barefoot on the sand, dressed in a light and airy chiffon gown with a magnolia on my wind-blown hair.

What about you?

When did you start dreaming of your wedding?

PLAYLIST: I’m Yours by Jason Mraz

I love the beat of this song – relaxed and laid back.  Everytime I hear this song, I feel like dancing and singing at the same time.  The title also says it all.

Snippet:
So I won’t hesitate no more, no more
     It cannot wait I’m sure
     There’s no need to complicate
     Our time is short
This is our fate, I’m yours

Feel free to contact me or leave a comment with your song suggestions.

Wedding Guest Etiquette: Giving a toast

Photo from *Cinnamons Flickr

I am not really good at speeches so I tend to shy away from giving a toast especially in weddings.  But I know I will have to give a toast someday.  Below are some guidelines I found on how to give a memorable toast.  I mean memorable in a good way.

  • Always make your toast about the bride and the groom.
  • Do not bring up anything about ex’es.
  • Mention how you are related to the bride or groom and your thought about the wedding.
  • Know the crowd.  A buttoned-up crowd may call for a more serious toast, while an easy-going crowd may be open to a more relaxed one.
  • Keep it short.  I have an attention span of a 5-year old and I find a lot of adults are the same.  Keeping it short also allows more time for other people to give their toast.
  • Keep it rated G.  Remember grandmas and grandpas are most likely in the party.
  • Add witty anecdotes, or something funny about the couple.  Everyone wants a good laugh.
  • Avoid racy and embarrassing subjects.
  • Stay relatively sober.
  • Don’t read your whole toast, but come prepared.  Think beforehand of what you will say, but don’t memorize your speech.  Be more spontaneous or at least make it look spontaneous.  Bring note cards if you’re worried you’ll forget or freeze up.
  • Speak slowly and loudly.
  • End on a high note.  Congratulate the couple or mention how happy you are for them, then don’t forget to say “Cheers!”

life bits

John just decided to take the dive instructor exam in Florida.  And I’m going with him!  We didn’t go anywhere this year as we started saving up for the the wedding.  But taking an exam is a reasonable excuse to go on a short vacation, isn’t it?  It’s affordable too.  We will be spending less than $400 each including air, hotel and car for 5 nights.

I just got free tickets to the Wedding Salon bridal event in NYC!  I’m so excited.  Of course, I will post a review of the show.  Unfortunately I will not be able to get there when it opens.  I don’t get out of work until 5 :( .  Click here for info to get tickets for free courtesy of Wishpot. See you there!

Dr. Wilson is staying!

If you have been following my blog, you should know by now that I’m a big House fan to the point that I feel like the whole cast is family.  And I will miss anyone who leaves the show.  When Dr. Cameron left House’s team, I was so disappointed I almost cried.  I’m a crybaby.  But Dr. Cameron came back and it was all good.

At the beginning of Season 5, Dr. Wilson decided to stay away from House and turned in his resignation letter.  I was still hopeful that House would be able to convince him to stay.  And tonight, he did come back!  Happy family again, I suppose :P .

Sending free text from iPhone

Photo from Impact Lab

The data plans that come with the iPhone don’t include text messaging.  You have to either add a messaging plan or pay per text.  After voice and data plan monthly charges, nobody needs another.  So I compiled a couple of ways you can send texts messages for free from your iPhone.  Some also apply to other smartphones.Remember that the recipient may incur charges for the messages you send.

1.  AOL Instant Messenger (AIM)

Just like your computer-based AIM, the AIM iPhone app can also send text messages to phones.  Access to AIM on the iPhone is included in the data plan and does not count as a text message.  Recipients of your messages can reply directly to your message and you will receive the replies via AIM. Click here for instructions at Wired: How-To Wiki.

Read on to see more ways to send text message for free from you iPhone.
