Overall, I give Megabus 4 stars out of 5, making it one of my top choices for transportation from NYC to Boston. Below is my review on my very first trip via Megabus.
POSITIVE:
- Cheap
- the fare starts at $1 and can go up to $14 each way. - Staff
- the staff were nice and friendly. The drivers seemed to drive safely. - Wifi
- the Megabus offers free wifi in their buses. The average speed I got was around 600kbps download and 150kbps upload. The network is unsecured and since you are sharing it with other passengers, make sure to implement security precautions. - Convenient stations
- the Boston station is at South station which is a walk away from the subway. The Megabus leaves from Gate 12 at the station. The gate may say Dattco since Megabus leases the gate with Dattco. The NYC station is at 31st and 8th (behind Madison Square Garden) and is just 3 blocks away from the subway. It is more convenient for me coz it is just 4 blocks away from where I work.
NEGATIVE:
- Curbside bus stop
- the NYC station is right on the street on 31st and 8th. There is no covered area to sit and wait. This is not good if raining. - Driver
- the driver we had from Boston to NYC had the radio on. I always thought that you’re supposed to respect your fellow passengers and try to keep the noise low. That should apply to the driver as well. - Delay
- (08/14/08 update) I have taken the Megabus a few times now, leaving NYC on Fridays. The arrival delay to Boston ranged from no delay to an hour (it should take 4.5 hours). I have taken other NYC-Boston buses and delays are practically the same due to traffic.
NEUTRAL:
- Ticketing
- you can only buy your tickets via the internet or phone and this limits passengers to those with credit cards. - Entertainment
- there were screens but were never used in the trips I was in. While I prefer to have a movie option, some may not. - Rewards program
- there is none. I know most buses that run the NYC-Boston route don’t have any. But I still think it would be a nice perk – two bus operations (Greyhound/Peter Pan, BoltBus) do have them.
I will be booking BoltBus for my next trip so stay tuned for my review and comparison.

While the Megabus WiFi network is unsecured, the connections are isolated. That is, 192.168.7.15 can not directly connect to 192.168.7.20. The wireless switch prevents this access.
Keep in mind, this does not stop somebody from sniffing plain text passwords, so use a secure protocol.
